Dear Friends,

Well, the holidays have pounced on us, leaving us winded and ready for a long nap! With the passage of Advent and Christmas, it is easy to feel exhausted more than a bit disoriented, and we haven’t even gotten to Lent and Easter yet! But these feelings are not unusual, and in fact make a lot of sense given the time of year and all!

The month of January is named after “Janus”, the two-faced god of Roman mythology for whom January 1st is dedicated. The early Romans believed that Janus, with his two faces, could look both towards the future and to the past at the very same moment. The problem is that Janus could not see the present; he was able to peer into the future and see events as they came towards him, and then they would immediately be past him, receding into history. This inability to synchronize past, present and future essentially left him immobile, an observer of events and nothing more.

We can fall into that trap if we aren’t careful; some people look at the past, constantly pointing out the failures of others and not seeing the good that they may do. Still others, forever focused on the future, never learn from the past nor appreciate what is before them at the moment. We see this in churches too; some groups always pointing out the failures of other churches and their histories, while others only focus on the future Coming of Our Lord, and not caring about what goes on around them now.

There are times when a middle-of-the-road approach is the best way. This coming year, may we be able to look to the future with joy and anticipation, appreciate the past for what it can teach us and the memories it fills us with, but most importantly, may we be able to sit down, pause for a moment, appreciate the present, and just say to ourselves “Thank you Lord, things are pretty good right now, and I am grateful.”

May God shower His grace on All Faith Church, and fill us with His Holy Spirit, so that we may be able to serve one another and serve all who come to us in need. And above all, may we have gratitude for all the gifts we receive from Him, and from each other. And may God bless you all!

Fr. Erich
